In planning for the AT a lot can be planned for, or alternatively a lot less. It boils down to flexibility and standard practices, cutoff dates, hunting seasons, permits, park regulations, weather and accessibility along the length of the trail.
Either fix mail drops to schedule and keep it, or request supplies a 7 to 10 days ahead as the need arise. As the season change some gear might be sent back to the support person(s) and other replacements obtained en route.
Keep the reasons for your hike in writing somewhere to reconsider, for in case (in a moment of hesitation) you decide to end your hike prematurely.
Leave footprints and take memories.
